This is a lego activity meats electricity science experiments for an epic, educational activity for preschoolers, kindergartners, grade 1, grade 2, grade 3, grade 4, grade 5, and grade 6 students. Squishy circuits is a science project that uses a conductive dough to learn about electricity.

This would make a GREAT science project for kids or summer activity for kids too!

To try this fun electricity experiments for kids all you need are a few simple materials you can easily order from Amazon , Walmart, or pick up at Hobby Lobby:

• 4M Clock Kit (currently $4.24) OR Copper and Zinc Strips, Connecting Wires, and Digital Clock with Wires
• Electric Dough (See recipe below)

So what in the world is Squishy circuits anyway? Glad you asked. Squishy Circuits were designed by St Thomas Univeristy and make teaching elementary age students about electricity FUN! Basically the electric play dough recipe acts as both an insulator and a conductor of the electricity in order. YOu can teach kids basic circuits, series circuits, and electrical overload by adding sights, sounds, and more – the  possibilities are endless. Sound complicated, keep reading. It is a really easy science project for kids!

Electric Play Dough

First of all, you will need to whip you your own Electric Play Dough. Don’t worry, it is super simple! To make the electric dough, simply mix together:

• 1 cup flour
• 2 cup water
• 1-2 teaspoons cream of tartar
• 1/3 cup salt
• 1 tablespoons vegetable or coconut oil
• Food Coloring

In a medium saucepan mix water, food coloring, and oil. Bring the mixture to a boil and remove from heat. Now add in flour, cream of tartar, and salt (the salt keeps it from sticking, the cream of tartar preserves the playdough). Stir, stir, and stir some more.  Continue kneeding to get out the lumps and make the color more even. Once the dough is cool enough to handle you are good to play or try this squishy circuits project.  Store the electric playdough in a zip-lock bag or airtight container.

This recipe great for this easy electricity experiments or for little hands to use simply as play doh. For our project we repeated with a different color.

Lego Electricity

Form your electric dough into a big square. Then add the iconic four flat circles to the top to make your dough look like a lego brick.  Make sure the square is large as you will need a couple inches of depth to insert your Copper and Zinc Strips.

To start the cool electricity experiments you are going to want to connect your connecting wires to the proper positive and negative ends. When you twist your wires onto the strips make sure that they are twisted onto the wires parts and not over the insulation.

Add one copper and one zinc strip to each Minion. During this step there are two things to watch for: Make sure your Minions are not touching anywhere and Make sure your strips are not touching anywhere.

Watch your clock turn on!

Electrical experiments for kids

Electric dough is a electrochemical battery also known as an electrochemical cell.

This means that chemical energy is converted into electric energy during spontaneous electron transfer. Each lego squish circuit will act as a buffer between the zinc ions and the copper ions. If the copper and zinc ions were to touch they would generate heat, but with the playdough lego squares acting as a buffer the electron transfer has to happen via wires which channel the energy into the clock!

Experiment with other household materials like a potato, lemon, or even Gatorade! Or attach christmas light bulbs or sound accessories if you want to take the fun electricity experiments further.
