Who said science wasn’t fun?! We worked on learning the periodic table with a hands-on chemistry activity that was fun and educational too! This simple periodic table activity is perfect for 5th grade, 6th grade, 7th grade, 8th grade, 9th grade, 10th grade, 11th grade, and 12th grade students as they learn the periodic table! Whether you are a parent, teacher, or homeschooler – you will love this easy making your own periodic table activity that allows kids to create some edible science which making the periodic table.

Periodic Table Activity

To try this periodic table fun activity all you need are a few simple materials:

  • periodic table for reference (here is our free printable periodic table)
  • graham crackers – we used several boxes of the square ones)
  • vanilla frosting – we used pre-made frosting for convenience but you could easily make it by mixing powdered sugar with milk
  • food coloring
  • black food gel (we used a ready to use tube)

Start by tinting your food coloring the different shades represented in your periodic table so that you can see the different classification of elements.

Spread frosting on the graham crackers to make a frosted cracker for each element in the correct color.

Learn the periodic table game

Before you eat your edible periodic table, let’s play a couple games to learn the periodic table!

  • Quiz yourself to remember the element name based on the abbreviation! Some are easy, while others are tricky because they use latin names
  • Have someone remove an element and see if you can figure out which one is missing
  • Put serveral of the elements back in order (just take 10 or so at a time)
