You’ve got to try making this DIY marshmallow blasters! Not only is this star wars activities which will make kids eager to join in on the fun, but it is educational too! This marshmallow stem activity allows kids to design, build, and decorate their shooters. Then, they can try out their design and make modificaitons to improve on their pvc pipe design. Let me show you how to make a shooter so you can get started with your kindergartners, grade 1, grade 2, grade 3, grade 4, grade 5, grade 6, older students.

How to make a shooter

So, what do you need to make your own star wars shooters?

  • at least 27″ pvc pipe
  • at least 2 T joints
  • at least 2 elbow joints
  • at least 2 caps
  • more pvc and larger variety of pvc joints will allow for more creativity and engineering
  • duct tape – to decorate
  • hand saw – used only with adult supervision!
  • sharpie
  • mini marshmallows as amunition
  • tape measure – to measure the success of your blaster (optional)

Make sure to grab our free Designing a PVC shoot worksheet below. This will give kids a starting point for their design and a space to draw what their model will look like.

Then use a sharpie to make lines where you want to cut your PVC pipe. Remember, measure twice, cut once!

Carefully, with an adults subervision cut along your lines to make your sections. How many sections will depend on your design. We have also included measurements for a base design in the free printable below.

Marshmallow stem challenge

Start putting together you homemade star wars blaster! We started by connecting the 7 inch piece of PVC tube with 1 3″ PVC pipe using the t junction. Fit snuggly.

On the other sid eofthe 3″ section, add another T junction, but this time with the stem facing the opposite direction.

Now on the upward facing T you just put on add a short 3″ section and an elbow joint. Now add your 5″ piece.

Next go back to the second T junction you added. Put a 3″ section in followed by an elbow and another 3″ section as pictured above.  You will also want to add a 3″ section of pipe to the remaining space in the first T junction you added. Now cap off the ends of the 3″ pieces only.

The 5″ piece opening is where you blow into and the 7″ piece opening is where you place your ammunition.

Gather up your mini marshmallow ammunition and put it in a ziplock bag for ease of use!

Use duct tape to decorate your unique blaster!

To shoot you will put the mini marshmallow in the 7″ tube opening.

Blow air in the end of the 5″ tube to launch the marshmallow.

AFter you have tried it out a couple of times to perfect your launching technique, use the marshmallow shooter worksheet to record how far you launched your marshmallows on three seperate tests.  THen note if there are any improvements or revisions you would try next time. If you like, make those changes and re-test. Science is all about making hypothesis, making observations, recording your findings, and changing your design!

We did these at our star wars birthday party and it was a big hit! First, we had kids build their own blaster “aka marshmallow shooter” out of pvc pipe. It was pre-cut and they could assemble it anyway they liked. Then we had various colors of duct tape for kids to decorate their weapons. Each kid got a bag of mini marshmallows for ammunition.
