About the team
Within the Shopify Trust Team, the Trust & Safety Team is committed to making commerce better for everyone. Our work includes shaping and enforcing policy, addressing online content concerns, identifying and mitigating potential high risk merchant behaviours, recovering financial losses, and collaborating on developing cutting-edge tooling to scale and streamline complex workflows; the mandate is challenging, varied and constantly evolving.

To ensure the Trust & Safety team can thrive on change, scale, and quickly adapt their policies and procedures, we have our own in-house Programs team. The Programs team is primarily responsible for managing Trust & Safety initiatives and roadmaps, creating and driving data and tooling requests, analyzing data to identify trends and areas for automation/improvement, creating data dashboards, configuring and maintaining our rules engine, and other critical operational responsibilities that help the Trust & Safety team run efficiently and effectively.

We're looking to add a Senior Business Analyst to our Trust & Safety Programs team. Among other things, this role involves building custom reports and data visualizations to assist with the operational and strategic success of the team, collaborating closely with our Data Science team to deep dive into the data and provide insights into key business trends, and analyzing the data and reporting needs of the business.

Real talk: Our unofficial team motto is "no task too small". You need to work hard, be eager and self-motivated, and be a great team player. Our super smart, dedicated and highly-engaged team members are always willing to jump in and help out, regardless of the task.

Responsibilities:
  • Writing data queries and building clear data dashboards to assist with the operations and strategic success of our Trust & Safety team
  • Measuring and effectively communicating results and business impact of data driven analysis to a broad spectrum of stakeholders, including leadership
  • Facilitate stakeholder sessions to identify opportunities for improved efficiency and effectiveness of Trust & Safety's everyday processes while establishing realistic and attainable KPIs
  • Proactively identifying downstream impacts of changes to workflows and behaviours
  • Supporting cross-functional projects from inception to completion
  • Maintaining strong relationships and high trust batteries with project stakeholders and data partners
  • Assist with training and support of other Business Analysts by helping them complete complex asks/deep dives and acting as a mentor in their development.

Requirements for the role:
  • A Bachelor's degree in a related field, and/or commensurate work experience
  • Experience leveraging large datasets to draw data insights that drive business decisions
  • Adept at creating meaningful data visualizations using tools (e.g. Mode & Tableau)
  • Proficient at writing complex and efficient SQL queries
  • Strong analytical, quantitative, and problem solving abilities
  • Exceptional verbal and written communication skills, exemplified through effective data storytelling
  • Excellent time management skills - you thrive when you're working on multiple projects, and are adept at balancing priorities, stakeholders and deadlines
  • Ability to dive-in to day-to-day workings of multiple teams and understand the full scope of their functions and responsibilities

Qualifications

Bonus experience:
  • Experience working with big data
  • Programming experience - any scripting language (e.g. Python, Ruby, Javascript)
  • Technical writing skills
  • Experience with fraud and risk management and/or legal compliance
  • Data warehousing and ETL experience
  • Leveraging statistical techniques to enhance data deep dives

This posting will close on Monday January 10th at noon EST.
