This leak proof bag is an amazing science experiment for kids of all ages to explore how polymer changes work together. Even though kids will be convinced the plastic bag of water will leak, this water experiment for kids will demonstrate to kids otherwise. Ready to try this amazing science experiment with everyday matierals? This easy science experiment is perfect for toddlers, preschoolers kindergartners, grade 1, grade 2, grade 3, and grade 4 students.
Amazing Science Experiment
This super cool science project uses 3 common mateirals you already have at home:
- resealable plastic sandwich bag
- 3 or more sharpened pencils
- water
Amazing Science Experiment with Everyday Materials
Fill your plastic bag about 3/4 full of water and seal it quickly. Poke the pointy end of a pencil into the bag. WIthout hesitating, slide the pencil the rest of the way through so that the it is halfway in and halfway out of the bag of water.
Water Experiments
Repeat with the remaning pencils.
Kids will be WOWed and impressed by how poking a pencil through the bag of water does not cause the water to leak out of the newly formed hole!
Polymer Experiments
So what is a polymer anyway? Well a polymer is simply a long chain of molecules that are connected. Lots of common items like balloons, paper, plastic bags, etc. are made up of polymers. When the pencil pushed into the bag, the pencil simply slid between the polymer chain. The polymer chains are held together around the ohld created by the pencil which prevents the water from leaking out.
Take it a step farther! What would happen if I pull the pencil out? How many pencils can I add? Does it mater if I use water or a different liquid? Does it have to be a pencil or can I use straws?
